German Cabaret in San Diego 2026

The German Theater Group San Diego is a community-based theater ensemble dedicated to bringing German-language theater and cabaret to audiences in Southern California. Founded in October 2016 by artistic director Astrid Ronke, the group began with 13 interested participants and has since grown to more than 30 actors, singers, and volunteers who work together both on stage and behind the scenes.

The ensemble is part of the German American Societies of San Diego, a nonprofit cultural organization that promotes German culture and traditions in the region. Most of the group’s performances take place at the German American Societies venue in El Cajon, just east of San Diego.

The group’s productions are inspired by the tradition of German Kabarett, a theatrical form that combines comedy, music, sketches, monologues, and poetry. These performances often take a humorous and sometimes satirical look at everyday life, culture, and politics, offering both entertainment and reflection. Programs typically mix well-known texts by classic German authors with original or lesser-known pieces, creating lively and varied shows.
