The San Diego Germans welcomed an important transition in its diplomatic representation this March 2026.
At a recent SD German Meetup attended by more than 50 German-speaking guests, former Honorary Consul Stephan Hollmann officially introduced his successor, Jörg J. Dürrbeck, who will now serve as the Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in San Diego. The event marked both a farewell and a new beginning for Germany’s local representation in Southern California.
Honorary consuls play a unique role in Germany’s global diplomatic network. Unlike career diplomats stationed at embassies or consulates, honorary consuls are typically local professionals who serve on a voluntary basis alongside their regular careers. They act as local representatives of Germany in places where a full consulate would be impractical but where a visible presence is still important.
Germany maintains hundreds of honorary consuls worldwide, including many across the United States. Their work complements the services provided by the Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the German Consulates General such as the one in Los Angeles.

However, many official consular services remain the responsibility of Germany’s Consulate General in Los Angeles. Honorary consuls generally cannot issue passports or visas and may not perform all formal consular acts.
For services such as passport applications, citizenship matters, visas, or complex legal issues, residents typically still need to visit the main German Consulate in Los Angeles.

Beyond administrative help, Honorary Consuls serve an important civic and cultural role. At our March 2026 SD German Meetup, Hollmann formally introduced his successor, Jörg J. Dürrbeck, signaling the next chapter in Germany’s local representation.
